Special Event: Luminara di San Ranieri

An important part of the festivities for San Ranieri in Pisa is the beautiful Luminara which takes place on the evening of June 16, the eve of the patron saint’s feast day. The tradition of lighting the city with candles (Luminara) dates back to 1688. Around 11 p.m. a fireworks show in the downtown along the Arno River. This event attrach many people every year.

The Venue: The City of Pisa

Pisa is in the hearth of Tuscany, land of Culture and hospitality, 10 Km (6 miles) from the sea, close to Florence, Siena, Lucca, San Gimignano, Volterra and many others. Pisa was one of four the Italian maritime republics and much of the city’s architecture was realized during this period (XI-XV century). In Pisa you can go up on the top of the Leaning Tower, you can visit the interiors of the Baptistery, the Cathedral and the Monumental Cemetery in the famous Miracles’ Square, which are excellent examples of the distinctive Pisan Romanesque style of architecture.
Moreover you can walk on top of the Medieval walls, visiting the Palace of the Knights of Saint Stephen, the prison of Count Ugolino, the Gothic Church of Santa Maria della Spina on the banks of the Arno river and, at the end, you can reach in a couple of minutes, Piazzetta Keith Haring, near the Railway Station, were the last public work of the American artist is exposed with its colors fully recovered, after the recent restoration. Throughout the month of June, Pisa hosts a series of celebrations that fill the city with a festive atmosphere, music and explosive colors. That’s why the so called Giugno Pisano is a major event awaited not only by city residents but also by many people from the surroundings that attend every year. In particular, on June 17 Pisa celebrates its patron saint, Saint Ranieri. The main and very popular celebrations are the Luminara, the Regatta and the Battle of the Bridge (this last one inspiring similar games all over Tuscany).

Getting to Pisa

Transport from Pisa Airport or Station to the City Centre

Pisa historic centre is almost entirely enclosed by 12th century fortifications. The city is laid out on a roughly square plan, with each side measuring around one and a half kilometres.
The river Arno divides the city into two parts which are known to locals as Tramontana, to the north, and Mezzogiorno, to the south. Pisa Centrale station is a major railway junction located on the southern edge of the city centre. Approximately one and a half kilometres to the south is “Galileo Galilei” International Airport, served by the Pisa Aeroporto railway terminal, is directly linked to the central station and the rest of the national network. The historic centre can easily be reached from the airport and the central station by bus (LAM Rossa) or by taxi. Frequent buses connect the centre to the various town districts
